Overview
ePump is a SaaS product by Fuelmetrics Inc. the product aim is to provide end to end solutions to the challenges of downstream sector of the oil and gas industry across Africa.
The Problem
Fuel station owners are facing challenges in adjusting fuel prices effectively because the current process relies on manual adjustments made by physical engineers. Without access to data on market trends and competitor pricing, station owners find it difficult to stay competitive and maximize profits. There is a need for a feature in ePump that automates and simplifies the price adjustment process, empowering station owners to make informed decisions and enhance their profitability in the fuel industry.
The Old ways
In my quest to solve this problem, I asked station managers how they update their prices , They all have to wait for a pump technician to come and manually change the price for each pump, Now imagine a company with 20 stations with at least 5 pumps each.
The goals
The design goals for the ePump Price Management feature are:
Improve Efficiency;
Streamline the process of adjusting fuel prices, reducing the time and effort required by station owners.
Enhance User Satisfaction:
Deliver a user-friendly and intuitive price management feature that meets the needs and expectations of fuel station owners.
Allow Price change at company level :
In cases of company with multiple stations, the goal is to allow them change price for each of the stations by one user
How might we solve the problem
Based on user research and user journey mapping, we came up with the following solutions:
Simplify Price Adjustment:
Design an intuitive user interface with drag-and-drop functionality, allowing station owners to easily adjust fuel prices with minimal training.
Provide Actionable Insights:
Implement data analytics algorithms to analyze market trends, competitor pricing, and historical sales data, providing station owners with actionable insights for informed pricing decisions.
Ensure Flexibility:
Develop customizable pricing templates and scheduling options, enabling station owners to tailor pricing strategies to their unique business needs and preferences.
The key indicatiors
Average Number of Price Change:
We measure how frequently station owners utilize the price management feature, indicating its usefulness and integration into their daily operations.
Time Spent on Price Adjustment:
We track the average time spent by station owners on adjusting prices before and after the implementation of the feature, reflecting efficiency gains.
Net Promoter Score (NPS):
Assess the likelihood of station owners to recommend the price management feature to their peers, indicating overall satisfaction and perceived value.
The Architecture
We approached this design by using the modular design architecture, Modular design is a design principle that emphasizes breaking down a system into smaller, independent modules or components that can be developed, tested, and maintained separately. Each module encapsulates a specific set of functionalities and responsibilities, allowing for easier development, deployment, and scalability of the overall system.
My White Board
I explained the user flow and process of the feature to my junior colleagues, walking them through the entire process from administrator login to real-time pricing updates, and highlighting key features such as price history. This explanation helped clarify the functionality and importance of each step, making it easy for my colleagues to understand how the feature works and how it benefits station owners. This exercise also helped our team sync better, ensuring we were all on the same page and aligned in our understanding of the feature, which has improved our collaboration and overall productivity.
Syncing with the backend team
I synced with the backend team, explaining the new feature in detail, including its functionality, data requirements, and integration points, which enabled them to provide the necessary API for its seamless implementation, ensuring a smooth and efficient connection between the frontend and backend systems.
The Outcome
Customer Testimonial
Notes
The feature has an approval module for stations that needs it
The feature made regular customers move to pro because of the new improvement
Stations owners with the pro feature doesn’t need to change the board price outside of their station because it’s now seamlessly automated
