Overview

Relocating to a new environment can lead to unexpected hormonal imbalances and menstrual health challenges for many women. The Ella App was created to address these issues, offering personalized insights, tracking tools, and resources tailored to the unique needs of women during transitions. The app empowers users to navigate these challenges with confidence and ease, ensuring better menstrual health management in new environments.

B2CSchool project

Duration

6 weeks

As a team of passionate designers, we are dedicated to creating an intuitive and empowering app that supports women with hormonal imbalances. Through user-centered research, iterative design, and constant feedback, we aim to craft a solution that addresses their needs and enhances their daily well-being.

Target audience

Women aged 18-30

Students studying abroad, adapting to new routines.

Individuals diagnosed with hormonal imbalances like PCOS, PMDD, or endometriosis.

' Communities and countries and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women.' — Michelle Obama

The Research

We focused on understanding the unique challenges female international students face when managing their menstrual health after moving abroad. Our goal was to uncover their needs and pain points to design an app that feels empathetic, user-centered, and truly addresses their concerns. Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative research, we aimed to get a well-rounded understanding of the problem.

Qualitative Research

A survey of 31 respondents revealed that 65% experienced irregular cycles within six months of relocating, 74% reported increased stress levels, 50% struggled to find familiar products, and 70% showed interest in an app tailored to their needs.

Quantitative Research

We Conducted 5 interviews, uncovering emotional and behavioral challenges. Through five interviews, I uncovered emotional and behavioral challenges faced by students, including isolation, difficulty accessing familiar products, and stress-induced cycle irregularities. Empathy maps captured their thoughts and feelings, emphasizing the impact of relocation on their menstrual health. One participant noted, “Moving here has made my cycle so unpredictable—it adds to the stress of settling in.”

Empathy Mapping

This process Helped identify emotional and practical challenges faced by female international students, such as adapting to new healthcare systems and coping with homesickness.

Problem statement

An international female student needs to deal about her menstrual cycle issues because relocating to new country results in cycle irregularities , as well as variations in menstrual and psychological symptoms that may arise due to the transition.

How Might We ?

We formulated a series of 'How Might We' (HMW) questions. These questions helped us explore opportunities for innovative, user-centered solutions.

How might we help female international students track their menstrual health effortlessly while adapting to a new environment?

How might we simplify the process of accessing reliable health information for users unfamiliar with local healthcare systems?

How might we design features that empower users to manage stress and maintain a balanced lifestyle abroad?

The Crazy 6

In our Crazy 6 session, each team member sketched six quick ideas to address the challenges faced by female international students managing menstrual health.
